Trusts & Welfare Guardianship Seminars
PFRC is running another series of Trusts & Welfare Guardianship seminars (Planning for when we are no longer here) at various locations around Auckland. These seminars are conducted by Tony Banks, Solicitor. A resource pack including a CD of documents is given to each family attending. This seminar costs $20 which is payable on the evening. ERO Report - Inclusion of Students with High Needs
In June the ERO released a report examining how well schools include students with High Needs. This report looks at High Needs Students enrollment, participation and achievement in academic, extra curricular and social life of the school. Click here to read the full ERO report.

Review of Special Education
The results of the review of Special Education were due late July. However, due to the large number of submissions and change of responsibility of Associate Education Portfolio, the results will not be available until mid September or October. Keep an eye on our website for more information.

Startstrong Seminar Presentations
On 1 July IHC, in collaboration with Parent & Family Resource Centre, ran a Startstrong seminar - A childrens rights seminar on early and sustained support for children with a disability. Keynote speakers included Tania Thomas (Deputy Health & Disability Commissioner), CCS Disability Action (Bay of Plenty Pilot Evaluation), Colleen Brown (Chair, City of Manukau Education Trust Taskforce) and Dr. Rosemary Marks (President, Paediatric Society of New Zealand). The Belonging Initiative is a community development partnership between four small agencies, Parent & Family Resource Centre Inc., Standards Plus, Parent to Parent Inc (Bay of Plenty) and Family Action Support Team Inc. This initiative is part of an approach to build a co-operative movement for the development of innovative service models in New Zealand that will support families of disabled people. The government has just published A Guide for Carers booklet and flyer. This is a practical help for people caring for families or friends who are older or have ill health, a disability or a mental health issue, alcohol or other drug issue. For more information click here.
which aims to better serve the needs of Pacific peoples with disabilities, their families or aiga and their caregivers. Led by government organisations, the project is co-sponsored by the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Pacific Island Affairs and has the support of eleven local and regional government agencies.
The Lu’i Ola Project is seeking expressions of interest from Pacific peoples with disabilities, their family members and carers to be active members of the Lu’i Ola Steering Group and the Lu’i Ola Operational Work Stream Groups from October 2009 to August 2010.
