The parents of disabled people who are concerned with the wellbeing and future of their loved one over the long term. 

 

Presenter:  Nan Jensen - Honours Law Student 

Nan has been involved in the disability sector since 1998 in governance, advisory, support parent, advocacy and employee capacities.  Two of her four children are on the autism spectrum and she decided to study law after taking a successful arbitration case against the Ministry of Education to retain ORRS funding for her son. She expects to graduate later this year and hopes to practice in the area of disability law.  She lives in Te Kowhai near Hamilton with her husband Soren, their children and their dog.

Who Should Attend:

If you are a disabled person, parent or guardian of a disabled person, you might want more choice about how services will be delivered, when they will be delivered and who will provide your government funded support.  Individualised funding helps you;

  • employ the support staff you want in your life - people who understand your culture, priorities, preferences and lifestyle choices
  • set your own timetable so support staff come and go as you want, so you can build stronger relationships and enjoy a better social life
  • source 'respite' care that best benefits your family
  • identify new sources of support
  • take charge of who enters your life and reclaim your priorities

Citizens Advice Bureau

The Remuera branch of Citizens Advice Bureau runs Finance and Debt Management Clinics, Legal Clinics, has a Justice of the Peace available and Cantonese/Mandarin speaker available at certain times of the week.  For further details please click here.  Also, CAB have developed an info sheet regarding Wills, to view please click here

 


 

IHC Call to Action

The IHC has published a new advocacy resource called Call to Action.  The booklet aims to raise awareness and encourage much needed action for New Zealand children and young people who are disabled.  Click here for more information on the Call to Action campaign http://www.ihc.org.nz/campaigns/election-2011/  IHC has consulted widely with families, professionals, community groups and with children and young people themselves about the issues and solutions identified in this Call to Action Resource.  IHC encourages you to read this resource and take action. Autism Spectrum Disorder Kiwisports Basketball

 

ASD Kids Charitable Trust is running basketball training at Breakers Gymnasium, Atlas Place, North Shore on Sundays from 12 - 2pm in Term 4, starting 30 October. Fun visually laid out ball skills with the aim to get moving to improve co-ordination, team skills, fitness and social play.  Contact Mary Henderson at maryhenderson2@me.com to register.  For further information visit www.asdkidstrust.com or click here. Woodworking Workshop in Silverdale


Bruce Davey has been running a successful Woodworking workshop in Silverdale for the last year and accepts students with disabilities.  Unfortunately the workshop space he occupies is now required back by the owner and Bruce would like to continue to operate this service from another suitable building.  For more information about the workshop (including his contact details) and how you may be able to assist Bruce find new premises please click here.   

 



 

 

Crafting A Future Workshop - Hawkes Bay - 17/18 March 2012

 

A weekend for families with a disabled family member who are seeking strategies for a better life.  This workshop is specifically designed for families and is relevant to any person who is concerned with the well being and future of a person with a disability over the long term. Purpose
This workshop will explore:

The importance of planning in securing the future and changing the present for someone who has a disability.
Who is there now and who will be there in the future to provide security, companionship and love.
Who will ensure the persons interests are protected, their contributions recognised and their needs and choices honored.

Building a larger network of enduring relationships to ensure ongoing support, community involvement & more opportunities
Thinking about roles.
Wills; Trusts; Estates; Benefits.

Overview

Day One:

Introducing the good life - attainable by everyone
Focusing on strengths and gifts to help us build the vision
Challenges of achieving the good life and the role of family governance
Valued and meaningful roles as an important cornerstone in crafting a good future
Introducing Family Trusts, Property Managers and Welfare Guardians.

Day Two

Creating a circle of support - a network of engaged, caring and skilled people who can build enduring relationships to help you towards your future
Where to from here? What is next in working towards your vision of the future.

 

Cost

The cost of the course is $30 per person. Price includes GST and covers tuition, all materials and morning/afternoon tea and lunch.

Course Leaders

This programme will be led by Lorna Sullivan. Lorna Sullivan is the Chief Executive for Standards Plus, a small, national agency working to promote innovation and change in delivery of services and development of community for disabled people, older people and people with experience of mental illness and their families. Lorna has worked extensively within the disability sector in New Zealand. Her particular areas of interest include working with people with a disability and family members to build services and supports that are genuinely relevant to their needs and their individual pursuit for personally meaningful futures. She uses what she learns to support people with a disability, their families, advocacy groups, service providers and governments interested in working for positive change.

Tony Banks- Solicitor (Wills, trust and estate planning) & Nan Jensen (Honours Law Student). Tony has been involved in the disability sector at the governance level since 1989 and periodically provides legal information to support families who have a member with a disability. He lives in Tamahere with his wife Maggie. Two daughters and two grandsons live close by in Hamilton, with a son and his partner living in Upper Hutt. He is a self employed lawyer and supports Maggie with Birthspirit – an independent midwifery education provider.

Waitangi Day Free Train Rides (for special needs children & their families)

 

The Manukau Live Steamers Club is holding thier annual free train rides for special needs children and their families on Monday 6th February 2012 between 11am and 4pm at Centre Park, 141 Robertson Road, Mangere.  There will be a Mad Butcher sausage sizzle for lunch.  All children MUST be accompanied by a caregiver please.  For more infomration please click here or ring Lynne Giles 535 8577.

 


 

Transition Expo 2012

 

The Parent & Family Resource Centre will be running our annual Transition Expo on Tuesday 15 May 2012 from 9am till 3pm, in association with the Ministry of Social Development.  The venue will be the AMI Netball Centre, 7 Allison Ferguson Drive, St. Johns, Auckland.  More details will be available soon. 


 

Office Space Available at Parent & Family Resource Centre

The Parent & Family Resource Centre has an office for rent at our premises 92A Princes Street, Onehunga.  We are a not-for-profit Disability Information Advisory Service, contracted to operate throughout Auckland - north to Warkworth and south to Waiuku.  Currently, some of our tenants include organisations working in the health/disability sector but this is not a requirement.  The available office is upstairs (sorry, no lift) and would comfortably fit 2 workstations.  Some utilities here at PFRC are shared such as kitchen/toilet facilities, internet access, phone system, photocopier, board room and mail delivery/postal service.  We have ample free street parking and are located within walking distance to Onehunga Mall.  The Onehunga train station is close by.  Please contact Lisa 636 0351 if you would like further information.
